A firm believer in ‘waste-not and want-not’, visionary Clive Sinclair founded Pacific Biofert several decades ago because he saw an opportunity to commercialise a waste material while developing innovative, sustainable products and solutions for responsible land users.

Over 30 years later, and the family-owned fertiliser company has taken out the ATEED 2018 Pacific Business category at the recent National Pacific Business Trust Awards, held during June, in Auckland.

Current Pacific Biofert’s Managing Director and son of the late Clive, Bill Sinclair says his father would be very proud of where the business is today, as is his Cook Islands mother Pepe and the rest of the family.

“It is a great honour to be acknowledged by the Pacific community at awards, which are specifically for Pasifika,” Bill says.

“It is important we have inspirational models in our community - these awards provide a platform to celebrate success and provide aspiration in our children.”

Pepe and the family’s Cook Islands heritage has played a huge part in the business, he adds.

“Mum’s Cook Islands heritage opened the door to the value of fish, using the raw fish recipe we manufactured the base product Fish Nutrient, this can be fed to livestock and also used to feed the soil.”

Like all businesses, Pacific Biofert has had its fair share of challenges, as well as successes.

“Being an innovative Pacific business challenges the conventional establishment,” Bill says.

“It takes time, research, tenacity and resources to get established and to break into mainstream sales, this has been a greatest challenge for us.”

Pacific Biofert is proud to be the oldest Organic certified supplier to the horticultural and agricultural sectors in New Zealand – it has been Biogro certified since 1987.

Another huge success for Pacific Biofert is remaining 100 percent Sinclair owned including storage, manufacturing and packing sites, Bill adds.

“We are recognised as the leader in Biological Fertilisers supply in Australasia.”

With big plans for Pacific Biofert in the pipeline, Bill and the Sinclair family have no intention of slowing down in the near future.

“We are investing in expansion, there is a great need to improve farming methods and environmental outcomes,” Bill says.

“Dad’s technology and use of our product range will clean our waterways compared to conventional products and help sustain economic returns for hardworking farming communities.”

Pacific Biofert was among the many great Pacific businesses and social enterprises throughout New Zealand recognised during the 11thNational Pacific Business Trust Awards on June 22.

There were seven categories, with the winners as follows:
