What is the Toloa Community Fund?

The Toloa Community Fund is an initiative that is funded by the Ministry for Pacific Peoples. The purpose of the fund is to encourage and support organisations/community groups to promote and deliver STEM activities to young Pacific people, through engaging key Pacific influencer groups including parents, families, and community leaders.

What is STEM?

STEM is an internationally recognised acronym that refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas of learning.

Why focus on STEM?

Innovation is essential for a successful and productive economy. To help achieve this, we need more skilled people with creative and problem-solving skills, and more people studying STEM subjects.

Many STEM occupations have high projections for future growth in New Zealand. These include information technology professionals, engineers, technicians, and natural and physical science professionals.

How much funding is available?

There are three categories of funding that applicants can apply for:

Grassroots initiatives (grants up to $5,000) - apply here

Funding for groups that have a new idea that they want to test and pilot.

Some examples of these are: expos, exploratory days, fono, purchase of devices, internet connectivity and training on digital devices.

Emerging initiatives (grants up to $20,000) - apply here

Funding for an initiative that has already had a positive impact in the community and you would like to improve it.

Some examples of these are: l earning how to co-design, learning how to code and develop a virtual game application, learning how to become content creators and developing a digital book.

Collaboration initiatives (grants up to $50,000) - apply here

Funding for an initiative that has already had a positive impact in the community and you would like to collaborate with others to scale up or expand to deliver in other regions or across several regions or nationwide.

What funded activities are in-scope and out-of-scope?

In-Scope funded activities that will be considered include the following:

  • Digital support including equipment, access to software, hardware, training on online platforms such as Zoom, social media platforms
  • Projects that demonstrate innovative solutions to meeting community needs for Pacific peoples

Out-of-Scope funded activities that will not be funded includes the following activities and events:

  • International travel
  • Personal activities, events, programmes, or any other personal expenditure
  • Activities, events, or programmes that are already funded by other funding sources
  • Activities, events, or programmes that do not demonstrate a benefit for Pacific Peoples.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for initiatives or activities that are creative, innovative, have high impact and will lift STEM aspirations amongst our Pacific communities.

We would like to see existing small-scale initiatives to scale up their activities to deliver STEM initiatives to a greater number of people, to enable participants to develop a more in-depth and greater understanding of STEM.

We are also encouraging existing initiatives to focus on one component of STEM.

  • Detailed timeline of programme delivery of events and activities

What are the key dates for applications?

Applications are now open and close at 12 pm noon on Friday 28 August 2020.

When will the successful applicants be notified?

The successful recipients of the Toloa Community Fund 2020/2021 will be announced in September 2020.
