 The Ministry for Pacific Peoples is the principal advisor on policies and interventions that improve outcomes for Pacific Peoples. We are the guardians and the caretakers of Pacific knowledge, culture and identity, and we support and take stewardship over our Pacific communities and peoples.

We have a challenging yet rewarding opportunity in our National Office in Wellington for a Principal Advisor, Languages. This role exists to provide support and professional leadership to the languages unit and to deliver high quality, robust advice relating to the theory and practice of language revitalisation. In this role you will be required to:

      •  Identify opportunities for the introduction or revitalisation of Pacific languages within communities and organisations and advise the Director, Languages on these with a view to incorporation in the work programme.
      • Establish strong relationships with client agencies and organisations to influence acceptance and incorporation of language revitalisation programmes.
      • Support the delivery of community-based language initiatives and programmes, including reviewing these to ensure alignment with the overall work programme and goals.
      • Work with the Director, Languages to ensure that the Ministry provides professional leadership and direction on languages revitalisation across the sector and in communities.
      • Assist with ensuring the development and implementation of high-quality language revitalisation work, by reviewing and advising on languages programme content.
      • Collaborate with the Director, Languages to provide thought leadership for the Ministry about languages revitalisation.
      • Support the Director, Policy to address complex language revitalisation problems, including by researching, analysing information and advising on options, risks and opportunities.
      • Prepare reports, briefings, speeches and papers as requested by the Director, Languages.
      • Develop specific strategies and/or plans on behalf of the Director, Languages as requested from time to time and leading the implementation of these.

 About you

You will have a Tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in the related field. You will have excellent understanding and awareness of the Government policy priorities and be able to apply these to the Ministry. You will have proven successful record of researching, developing, managing and delivering specialist advice at a senior level for a minimum of 5 years. In addition, you will be fluent in at least one Pacific language.
