People in Aotearoa New Zealand can now sit their driver licence theory test in Fijian.

From 18 June 2025, people in Aotearoa New Zealand will be able to sit their driver licence theory test in Fijian, following the translation of the test questions into the language.

The initiative, led by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, aims to make driver licensing more accessible for the Fijian community. The introduction of Fijian means the test is now available in 14 languages, including Samoan, Tongan and te reo Māori.

Fijian was prioritised for translation due to high demand and migration rates, with 4,000 people migrating from Fiji in 2024 and 5% of overseas licence conversion applications coming from people from Fiji.

As Fiji is a non-exempt country for overseas licence conversions, drivers must pass both a theory and practical test to obtain a New Zealand licence. The availability of the theory test in Fijian is expected to make this process easier and support safer driving.

The translation was produced by the Department of Internal Affairs’ Translation Service and underwent a rigorous quality assurance process, including multiple stages of review and in-house checks. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve access to driver licensing resources for speakers of different languages, including Pacific languages.

As well as the car licence theory test, questions for other licence classes have also been translated into Fijian. Several driver training resources are also being translated in response to strong demand from community driver licensing support programmes.
