Pacific Wāhine Fund

Pacific Wāhine Fund

The Pacific Wāhine Fund was limited to 2023 only, and is now permanently closed.

The Puawānanga Pacific Aotearoa Wāhine Fund (Pacific Wāhine Fund) supported community groups that enabled wāhine to participate in activities that contribute to their overall wellbeing, sports participation and/or active recreation.

This project was possible thanks to funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) as part of its work to leverage the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ and to create a lasting legacy for Aotearoa New Zealand and our communities.

There were two components to the fund.

Pacific Wāhine Community fund

The first component was a contestable fund that provided resources, opportunities, and initiatives for not-for-profit Pacific community organisations, groups and clubs that support Pacific wāhine in their overall wellbeing, sports participation and active recreation. Applications could be made for amounts up to the value of $5,000.

This funding supported initiatives and projects that demonstrated how they supported wāhine to overcome some of the intersecting barriers they faced that limited their ability to participate in activities that enhance their wellbeing.

This component had special consideration for groups, organisations, initiatives and projects that had a focus on removing barriers around period poverty and the impacts for wāhine.

Pacific Wāhine Individual Fund

The second component of the fund was individual grants awarded to five Pacific women of up to $10,000 each to support advancement in their chosen field or career.

This grant allowed wāhine the opportunity to upskill in their chosen career pathway through study, development opportunities, or 'on the job' training. The fund also considered applications from wāhine in professional sports careers, including regional and/or national representative teams or sports.

Special consideration was given to wāhine who would like to advance in a sports-related profession or field (this can include players, coaches, commentators, referees, umpires, sports journalism, radio, etc.).

The objectives of the Pacific Wāhine Fund wee to:

  • improve overall wellbeing outcomes among Pacific women and girls through active sports and wellbeing activities
  • increase participation for women and girls in sports or active recreation
  • raise awareness and understanding of the benefits of sports and wellbeing activities for women and girls
  • promote and amplify women's and girls' wellbeing and sports access.
  • Applications for the Pacific Wāhine Fund opened at 9am on Thursday, 27 July 2023.
  • Applications closed at 12pm on Tuesday, 8 August 2023.
