Kiribati Language Week is back, bringing with it a celebration of identity, connection, and cultural pride.
The week runs from Sunday 6 July to Saturday 12 July 2025 and coincides with Kiribati independence anniversaries, adding deeper meaning to the festivities.
Secretary for Pacific Peoples Gerardine Clifford-Lidstone, Chief Executive says the Ministry for Pacific Peoples is proud to support the I-Kiribati community in honouring their language and traditions.
“Wikin te Taetae ni Kiribati is a powerful reminder of how language connects us to our roots and strengthens our future. We’re proud to stand with the I-Kiribati community as they continue to share and preserve their language across Aotearoa New Zealand,” says Gerardine.
Kinaua Ewels from the New Zealand Kiribati National Council has the awarded title Te Mwamira for championing her language and culture. She says the theme speaks to the heart of what it means to be I-Kiribati in Aotearoa.
“Our language holds the wisdom of our ancestors, our faith, our customs and our joy. When we speak Kiribati, we honour the strength of our people and share a part of who we are with the world,” says Kinaua.
This year’s theme is Maiuakinan te katei ri nanon te tangira ma te ikarinerine bon wantongan te mwenga ibukin te rikirake – Living our valued cultural practices through love and respect upholds our dignity and growth for a successful future.
The theme speaks to the enduring importance of language and culture as foundations for wellbeing, unity, and self-worth. For many young I-Kiribati growing up in Aotearoa, reclaiming and using the language offers a sense of grounding and pride.
“As a teacher and language tutor, I see the difference it makes when young people hear and speak Kiribati. It reminds them who they are and that their identity matters,” Kinaua adds.
Whether you have Kiribati heritage or not, everyone is invited to explore the language and culture this week — through events, learning resources, and community storytelling.
