Fijian Language Week, held from 6 to 12 October 2024, provides an opportunity for New Zealand’s Fijian community to celebrate and strengthen their language and culture.
This year’s theme is ‘Vakamareqeta na Vosa Vakaviti’ which means to nurture and sustain the Fijian language. It calls on Fijians to continue efforts to ensure their language thrives for future generations.
Secretary for Pacific Peoples, Gerardine Clifford-Lidstone, stresses the importance of nurturing the Fijian language in the context of New Zealand’s multicultural society:
"Language is more than just a way to communicate – it’s a way to connect with our ancestors, our traditions, and our identity. Fijian Language Week is a chance for the community to celebrate their language and to remind ourselves of the importance of passing it on to future generations."
The 2018 Census shows that 24% of New Zealand’s Fijian population speak the language, with a notable decline in language use among younger generations. Just 9% of those under 15 years old speak Fijian, highlighting the need for ongoing efforts to promote language learning and use.
Fijian communities across New Zealand – from Northland to Southland – have organised events to support language learning and cultural exchange for all New Zealanders to engage with Fijian culture.
"I encourage everyone, whether you’re Fijian or not, to take part in Fijian Language Week and explore the beauty of Vosa Vakaviti. Your participation helps keep the language strong," says Gerardine.
The Ministry’s website and social media platforms will feature resources such as language guides, event schedules and stories from the Fijian community throughout the week.
"Vinaka vakalevu – a heartfelt thank you to the Fijian community for your dedication to keeping Vosa Vakaviti alive," Gerardine adds.
