The Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) has announced the launch of its annual Pacific Health Education Scholarships.
These scholarships, valued at $140,000 in total, aim to support Pacific students pursuing careers in health-related fields as well as medical professionals currently practicing in their respective area of work.
There are 11 scholarships available to be awarded to 19 individuals, including the addition of two new scholarships, the Elizabeth Powell Nursing Scholarship and the Dr Sitaleki Finau Scholarship.
The PMA scholarships are open to Pacific students and health professionals and will provide financial assistance to successful applicants.
Dr Jitoko Cama is the PMA Memberships Board Chair and encourages all eligible students and health professionals to apply.
"This is an incredible opportunity for those eligible to further their education and career aspirations,” Dr Cama says.
The PMA scholarships are an important tool in helping build the Pacific health workforce as well as promoting diversity in the healthcare industry.
"This is one step towards empowering Pasifika to make a positive impact in their communities; investing in the education of our future health workforce is essential."
Meanwhile, the PMA Chief Executive Debbie Sorensen has acknowledged the namesakes of the scholarships.
"The PMA Scholarships are named after Pacific health leaders, most who have passed on and whose legacy will remain for years to come,” she says.
"Their service and leadership to Pacific health has been transformational and it is fitting that these scholarships are contributing to the success of our future Pacific health workforce.
"We especially want to acknowledge our dear friends and colleagues, Elizabeth Powell and Professor Sitaleki Finau, who dedicated their lives to the health and wellbeing of our Pacific communities.
“We are proud to honour them with these new scholarships."
Applications are now open and will close on June 2.
