A big-picture thinker, Okirano Tilaia (pictured) has some lofty aspirations he is determined to achieve, and one by one he is ticking them off his list.
Of Samoan descent, the Otautahi Christchurch-raised 21-year-old is currently completing a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Political Science and International Relations, and minoring in Human Services and Education, at the University of Canterbury.
A Prime Minister’s Pacific Youth Awards Leadership and Inspiration category recipient in 2019, Okirano is continuing his relationship with the Ministry for Pacific Peoples this year, joining the Policy and Strategy team as a Tupu Tai intern.
Okirano applied to the internship programme offered to Pacific tertiary students and recent graduates interested in working in the public sector as it is an area where he can make a positive impact on Pacific communities in Aotearoa New Zealand, he says.
Managed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) Langa Le Vā (Pacific Policy) team, Tupu Tai internship placements are offered at MBIE as well as a range of government agencies, including MPP.
Selected interns, like Okirano, are driven to serve Pacific communities throughout New Zealand and find reward in knowing their work will directly impact the improved wellness of Pacific peoples.
“I am enthusiastic about gaining profound insights into Pacific communities, understanding their unique cultural aspects, and actively contributing to initiatives, aimed at their upliftment,” Okirano explains.
“During my time at MPP, I am eager to delve into policy development, engage in meaningful conversations addressing challenges our Pacific communities face.
“Moreover, I am excited about the opportunity to network with experienced professionals and mentors in this field, fostering connections that will aid both my personal and professional growth.”
As Okirano finishes up his university studies, he says his aspirations are revolving around leveraging his tertiary education and experience to make a tangible impact in Pacific communities.
“Whether it is through innovative problem-solving, collaborative teamwork, or creative thinking, I aspire to continuously learn, grow, and make a positive difference in the world around me.
“Ultimately, I want to give my parents their dream house and for them not to have to work.
“Their sacrifice and hard work has played a major role in where I am today.”
