Hearing insights from Pacific survivors is invaluable to the work of the Crown Response to the Abuse in Care Inquiry.
The Crown Response Unit is responsible for coordinating government’s response to the Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry – looking into what happened to tamariki, rangatahi and adults in State and faith-based care in Aotearoa New Zealand between the years 1950-99, and beyond.
“Established in 2019, the Crown Response Unit is currently focused on supporting a survivor-led design of a new redress system to make things better for survivors,” says Matalena Leaupepe, who is leading the leading Pacific work in the Crown Response.
Matalena is currently inviting Pacific survivors to register their interest in working with the Crown Response as and when an opportunity arises.
“Over the last 12 months we have engaged with survivors to help us with our work programme,” Matalena says.
“It is important our Pacific survivors have a voice in this very important piece of work, so we encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say.”
The Crown Response Unit offers a mea alofa for survivors and wellbeing support and all information collected is treated confidentially.
