Some of New Zealand’s most remarkable Pacific peoples have been celebrated with 2025 New Year Honours.
Twelve Pacific honourees featured in the 190 total recipients of New Year Honours, who have been recognised for their contributions to Aotearoa’s communities, arts, advocacy and academia.
Debbie Sorensen, who has been the Chief Executive Officer of the Pasifika Medical Association Group since 2008, was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Pacific health. This recognises her decades-long career in Pacific health services in Aotearoa and across the region, during which she has driven initiatives that address health disparities, foster resilience, and empower Pacific families and communities.
Since beginning her medical career as a psychiatric nurse, Debbie has worked as the Chief Advisor for Pacific Health at Ministry of Health and is now the Chair of the Pacific Expert Advisory Committee as well as holding governance roles.
Debbie says she is “deeply humbled to be recognised in this way, but this award is not about me alone. It is a reflection of the collective effort of everyone who is committed to improving health outcomes for Pacific people.
“Together, we are stronger and able to make a real difference.”
As well as recognising the support of her family and work colleagues, Debbie thanks Pacific communities for their strength and resilience.
“Health equity for Pacific communities is a cause close to my heart. I have been privileged to work alongside dedicated teams and inspiring Pacific communities who consistently demonstrate resilience and strength.
“This recognition is a tribute to them and their unwavering commitment to creating a better future.”
