Measles is circulating in New Zealand, particularly in the South Auckland region.
In Auckland alone, 881 cases have been reported to date, and of these cases a large proportion were affecting Pacific people.
Measles can be dangerous for children and adults and the best way to protect yourself and your family is to be vaccinated against the highly contagious disease.
Babies and children need two vaccines; the first given from 12 months old, the second at four years old, and if you are under 50 and do not know if you have been vaccinated, you can also get a free vaccine.
If you think you have measles, it is advisable to phone first before visiting your doctor.
To prevent the spread of measles, Counties Manukau Health is offering free MMR vaccinations at Manukau Super Clinic on Saturdays, from 9am–4pm; and at Clendon Public Nursing Office on weekdays, from 9am–4pm.
Visit HERE for more information, or call Healthline: 0800 611 116 for measles advice.
Local Doctors is also offering free MMR vaccinations to its registered patients aged one to 50 years who need a vaccination or are unsure of their vaccination status. Visit HERE for more information.
Meanwhile, the Auckland Regional Health Service has issued a series of fact sheets in various Pacific languages including Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island Māori; and Niuean.
