New Zealand’s Tuvaluan community is preparing to celebrate Tuvalu Language Week from 29 September to 5 October 2024.
This year’s theme is ‘Taofi mau ki tau ‘gana, mo tou gaugaleo, me ko tou iloga tena – Uphold your language and dialect for it is your identity.’ The theme highlights the importance of language as a fundamental aspect of cultural identity.
Secretary for Pacific Peoples Gerardine Clifford-Lidstone reflects on the significance of this celebration: "Language is more than just words; it carries the essence of who we are, our genealogies and histories, and our connections to our ancestors. Tuvalu Language Week is a powerful reminder of the role that language plays in maintaining these ties."
The Ministry for Pacific Peoples has partnered with community groups to organise a range of activities aimed at fostering language use and cultural pride. The theme, developed by Kaiga Tuvalu Otago and endorsed by national leaders, underlines the belief that preserving one's dialect strengthens community bonds and ensures the continuity of cultural traditions.
According to the 2018 Census, 48% of Tuvaluans living in New Zealand can speak Te ‘Gana Tuvalu. With language transmission in homes becoming increasingly rare, there is a growing urgency to engage younger generations in learning the language.
"I encourage everyone to take part in this celebration – whether you’re learning a new Tuvaluan phrase or attending a cultural event, your participation helps keep the Tuvaluan language alive and thriving," says Gerardine.
Resources, including language guides, event schedules, and cultural content, will be available on the Ministry’s website and social media channels throughout the week.
"Fakafetai lasi/Fakafetai lahi - a heartfelt thank you to the Tuvaluan community for leading this important work in language preservation," Gerardine adds.
