Feedback is being sought by the Ministry for Pacific Peoples (MPP) on its Long-term Insights Briefing (LTIB) proposed topic of Improving Pacific data equity: Opportunities to enhance the future of Pacific wellbeing.

The LTIB is a new government requirement under the Public Service Act 2020, which requires agencies to think at least 10-years ahead, examining future trends, risks and opportunities that do or may affect Aotearoa New Zealand. This is the first-time agencies are producing LTIBs.

Long-term Insight Briefings are intended to help promote long-term thinking so the public service is better placed to respond to future change and can deliver enduring benefits for people in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Secretary for Pacific Peoples Laulu Mac Leauanae says the topic of improving Pacific data equity was chosen because of the wide-ranging impacts it has on New Zealand’s Pacific communities.

“Looking at Pacific data equity provides an exciting opportunity to better understand how government departments collect, store, analyse and use data and the real-world impacts on communities,” Laulu says.

“Our Pacific communities are often misrepresented or underrepresented in data sets, which means funding and policy decisions do not always recognise the real impact on our people.

By exploring this topic through the LTIB process, it is hoped MPP can better understand the implications of how government departments collect and analyse Pacific data so key recommendations can be made to strengthen the validity of decisions that affect Pacific peoples now, for the future, Laulu adds.

Consultation on the Ministry's proposed topic for its Long-term Insights Briefing will run until January 28, 2022.

This initial consultation will give us feedback and insights on the subject, scope and focus of the LTIB.
